This year I promised myself that I will not join any society at university, because they are waste of money and some make empty promises. I remember there was a society in 2006 that promised us a beach trip and lots of get togethers. However we had only one function. This year I said, no matter what happens I am not joining any society. I guess I cannot say the same any more since i’m stuck with five societies.
During societies evining I went to Mullins Hall just to check on people. On the door I met my friend Mzo and he told me to join a certain society that I am not going to mention. He wanted me to join because him and my other friends have joined, so i must join as well. I tried to avoid him but a friend called Asanda dragged me to the table. I was left with no choice but to sign. On my way out I met Luvuyo a.k.a Satan or Devil/ Sex machine- another friend of mine. He told me about Xhosa society. I asked him, what is the society all about? he didn’t say much. He said every Xhosa person has joined and I will be a fool if i do not join- so I signed again. I am not going to say much about other society, I might bore you.
I had a choice to refuse but I could not say no to my friends. May be I didn’t want to disappoint them. Now I am stuck with these societies and there is nothing I can do because the money has been deducted. I tried to de-register some but they were going to deduct half of the amount. Now I have been forced to unbook my breakfasts for this month in order to pay for all these societies. I am not eating breakfast now and sometimes I feel like I’m gonna faint in lectures. I guess that’s the price I have to pay for not being able to say NO to things that I do not want.
